Infant Nutrition Council (INC)

The Infant Nutrition Council Ltd (INC) was established in 2009 and is an amalgamation of the Infant Formula Manufacturers’ Association of Australia (IFMAA) and the New Zealand Infant Formula Marketers’ Association (NZIFMA).

INC represents the interests of the infant formula and toddler milk industry in Australia and New Zealand which advocates optimal nutrition for all infants. Its membership is made up of global companies; well-established local companies; formula manufacturers; and ingredient manufacturers and suppliers. Their purpose is to be the trusted voice of the Australian and New Zealand infant formula and toddler milk industry supporting the protection and promotion of breastfeeding and where necessary the proper use of breast milk substitutes.

All members abide by a Code of Conduct that provides direction on industry issues including the support of breastfeeding, food regulations and standards, food safety issues, and company representatives’ conduct and activities. The Code of Conduct also sets out expectations for the responsible marketing of infant formula through the local interpretations of The International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes 1981 (WHO Code). In Australia that is the Marketing in Australia of Infant Formulas: Manufacturers and Importers Agreement (MAIF Agreement) and in New Zealand it is the Infant Nutrition Council’s Code of Practice for the Marketing of Infant Formula in New Zealand (INC Code of Practice). INC has strong relationships with key Australian and New Zealand government departments and agencies and engages directly with governments in Australia and New Zealand to promote and protect the interests of the infant formula industry in the development of policy and enforcement of regulations. INC also works with local and international regulators to advance infant nutrition. INC advocates to ensure that the regulatory environment includes the benefits provided by global research and the consideration of global trade and harmonization with international food standards. INC members include Abbott Nutrition, Aspen Nutritionals, Bayer, Fonterra, HJ Heinz, Nestlé, Danone Nutricia and Synlait. Associate members include A2 Infant Nutrition, Australian Dairy Park, Burra Foods, Dairy Goat Co-operative, GrainCorp, Murray Goulburn, New Image Group, Tatura, and Westland.
